Greed - is Money the Root of All Evil?
How many times have you heard someone say “money is the root of all evil”? I have heard it so many times, I stopped counting. It is a very popular thing to say, but it isn’t true!
I do not want to get into a theological debate about evil and its roots, but I will say that “money is the root of all evil” is a misquote of a biblical source, in Timothy 6:10. As we ll know, English translations vary, but all of them say something on the lines of “for the love of money, is the root of all different kinds of evil”. Do you notice the difference? It’s not money itself being the root of all different kinds of evil, it’s about the love for money. See how a few small words make all the difference?
A lot of people would try to be as poor as possible very quickly, if any religions truly pointed to the money as the root of all evil. Money would be treated like the pest, like a catching disease.
There are some people who give away their income or they choose poverty to better serve others. Most of them will describe their lifestyle as a calling, or maybe as a gift. Something that is beyond of what is required.
You do not have to be a believer, but just think about the statement that money is the root of all evil. What does this really mean? If money was the root of all evil, if that was the case, only people who had money would be able to do evil things. It would also mean that the people with the most money would be the most evil of them all. Sad but true, some people without money seem to think that it’s true, but IT IS NOT! We are all capable of the same. We can all cheat and steal. Assault and kill. The poor, the rich and those in between.
Lets look at it from another angle. Greed, or the love of money!! Doesn’t greed cause people to do some pretty horrible, awful things? It’s the same with lust for power. Sex and hatred. Desire for revenge. Jealousy… and there are also some more noble things like desire for purity or maybe an attempt to protect someone. To a man who drops a drug into a woman’s glass so he can take her home, money is very rarely on his mind.
Money is the root of all evil is very often used as an excuse for not saving. An excuse as if to say, “If I am poor, I’m a better person”. Spending all of your money as soon as you receive it doesn’t make you a better person. It rather makes you a very irresponsible person. And than again looking at it from another point of view, having a back up and saving for your future does not make you evil, it rather gives you possibilities. Possibilities that when the need arises to be able to help others or maybe even to avoid needing the help of others. Something to consider, don’t you think?
