How do you feel about the weather?

How do you feel about the weather?

They say February to be the month of love, chocolate, well, pretty ‘Valentiney’. But some say it is dark. Depressing. Cold. Wet and windy….

In spite of February being our shortest calendar month (nevertheless the extra leap day) it appears to last the longest of the winter months. I guess the days feel longer as we are all desperately waiting for the sun to return and even though we know in our heads that it will, it seems dark, cold and there seems to be no end to the return of light.

It is a said that the most depressing days fall in January, as most are dealing with post-holiday bills, the short amounts of sunlight, their New Years resolutions are already broken and not to forget there are days like Valentine’s, Mother’s Day, Easter, Birthdays and maybe even school breaks slowly creeping up on them. Everyone feels the pressures.

Maybe this is a good time for more support and more love at this time of year to counterbalance the cold and snowy winter and to warm our hearts when the outside air is still blowing cold.

Well, I am living very close to the sea and it is another dark, wet and windy afternoon, but I consider myself very lucky, I enjoy any kind of weather. :-)

February 29th 2008, another Leapyear

February 29th 2008, another Leapyear

Here it is!! … FEBRUARY 29th… It’s a LEAP YEAR!! … an extra “BONUS” day in the year 2008 which gives us another chance to ‘catch up’ on something important. Something we been meaning to do and maybe put off to another day.

Well, I know what I be doing with my extra day today. ;-)

Did you know that most years that can be divided evenly by 4 are leap years?
Here is an example:
2008 divided by 4 = 502 >> Leap year!

But of course, as with most things, there IS an Exception!
Did you know that Century years are NOT leap years?
UNLESS of course they can be evenly divided by 400.
Here is an example:
1700, 1800, and 1900 were not leap years, but 1600 and 2000, which are divisible by 400.

Where the Hell is Matt?

Where the Hell is Matt?

Matt is a 30-year-old deadbeat from Connecticut who used to think that all he ever wanted to do in life was make and play videogames. He achieved this goal pretty early and enjoyed it for a while, but eventually realized there might be other stuff he was missing out on. In February of 2003, he quit his job in Brisbane, Australia and used the money he’d saved to wander around the planet until it ran out. He made this site so he could keep his family and friends updated about where he is.

A few months into his trip, a travel buddy gave Matt the idea of dancing everywhere he went and recording it on his camera. This turned out to be a very good idea. Now Matt is quasi-famous as “That guy who dances on the internet. No, not that guy. The other one. No, not him either. I’ll send you the link. It’s funny.”

Isn’t this great? Matt had a really good time making this.

I love the music ‘Deep Forest’, ~ Sweet Lullaby ~

Toxic Chemicals in Cut Flowers | Dont Smell The Flowers | David Suzuki

Toxic Chemicals in Cut Flowers | Dont Smell The Flowers | David Suzuki

I keep coming across reports, research and information about cut flowers and the impact they can have on your health, especially that of your children. I am sure that most are already aware of the ‘dangers’, but for those who aren’t I find that the article below is worth sharing.

Whether they’re given to us by the boy next door or are grown in our gardens, everyone loves flowers. But are those tulips, foxgloves, and roses killing you?

They just might be.

The majority of cut flowers you’ll find at your local florist are grown in developing countries, where growers frequently use pesticides that may be banned in other countries. Heavy use of pesticides get on worker’s clothes, in their skin and lungs, and are carried to their homes. Pesticides also contaminate the soil and seep into water supplies. And those same pesticide-laden flowers end up in the vase on your dining table.

But these harmful chemicals aren’t restricted to developing nations.

The pesticides that your neighbours use to kill insects and weeds in their yards also work a little too well. These toxic chemicals have both short-term and long-term health effects. Pesticide exposure is associated with a frightening list of health effects, such as increased risks of cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, birth defects and organ damage… (read more)

I am sure that many of us have been given beautiful flowers for Valentine‘s day….DON’T SMELL THE FLOWERS! …. the things you have to watch out for, I don‘t know!!

I Have News For You!

I Have News For You!

I am sure that on a few occasions when you took your son to his martial art class or hoisted your daughter onto a horse ready for her riding lesson, that the thought crossed your mind that you are having more fun and are enjoying this more than they are. Come on, just admit it.

It is NOT wrong to offer your kids a taste of the things you once so much desired when you were ’little’. Well, of course that is IF they want to do those things.

BUT, it could be that you have a big problem on your hands if your wishes, wants and dreams overpower those of your children. Children have to be able to develop their own interests. They have to grow into their own people.

Children aim to please you as a parent, and once they know that an activity they are involved in makes your day, they would most likely continue with it, as they think it makes you happy. But once they grow older they won’t appreciate having ‘missed’ their own childhood to make up for yours, so in the long-run, they may begin to even resent you for it.

We are all doing it!… and be aware, that if you are, you may be trying to live what you feel you missed out on through your children. Living through others comes from a feeling that you are unable to achieve what you want and living through others is only masking the feeling. I have good news for you! There is still time for YOU to achieve your wishes… desires… your dreams.

What is stopping you? The only thing in favour of truly living is to drop feeling guilty, as guilty feelings are holding you back. Let go of your doubt and your fears. Release the negativity and the “what if’s”. Stop telling yourself that you can’t as it is sabotaging your efforts at living the life that YOU want. It is time to tell yourself that YOU CAN!

Are You Sleeping in a Dangerous, Electrically Polluted Bedroom?

Are You Sleeping in a Dangerous, Electrically Polluted Bedroom?

Vicki Warren of Bau-Biologie talks about how to create a sleeping sanctuary.

Bau-biologie is a term from Germany that means “building biology,” and it is at the forefront of intertwining the nurturing feelings of nature with the places in which you live and work. This is the holistic approach to the “built environment.”

5 Things to look out for:

1. ONLY battery operated devices near your bed
2. Turn of the bedroom circuit breaker plugs at night
3 Eliminate or at least shield from all radio frequency or wireless
4. Use beds without metal
5. Make sure there are no elevated magnetic fields

How Your House and Office Makes or Breaks Your Health

My personal comment:
If you are like most people, you spend most of your life in your home and in the office (like me) and the materials used in those spaces can have a huge impact on your physical as well as emotional health. Over time the body absorbs ANY number of potentially toxic substances that are existing freely around us on a daily basis.

These also include:

Toxic gases for example from paints, cleansers, air fresheners, vinyl floors, carpets, upholstery fabrics, and … and … and …(to many to mention), can cause cancer, damage your liver, kidney and also the central nervous system. Certain wood products used for decks and playground equipment that are pressure-treated are treated with pesticides that contain arsenic. Formaldehyde is emitted into your home’s air from engineered wood products that are commonly used to make cabinets, furniture and wall panelling. The flame retardant known as PBDEs is contained in foam furniture padding, which is HIGHLY toxic and now shows up even in breast milk!

Have you ever thought about the environment you live and work in?
The chemicals that are floating around you?
How it can have a dramatic impact on your state of mind?

Some of us may not be able to build a new home with all natural materials. But there is no reason why you can’t make ’small’ changes and bring some “healthy” material into your home and your work space.

How about bamboo flooring? Avoiding chemical cleansers? Air-fresheners? Detergents? Have you ever considered full spectrum- lighting to have the benefits of natural sunlight indoors? How about adding some houseplants at home or in your office? And most of all, spend some time in a natural environment as often as possible. Maybe in places like Arundel Wildfowl and Wetland Trust. This is where I go about three times a week. I am sure that wherever you live, that there are some nice places in your area. You can always share them with us and also what changes in your “space” you have made lately.

I have a secret

I have a secret

I think that somewhere briefly mentioned that after moving into my new apartment I was ‘housebound’ (well, ‘apartment bound’ for that matter… Do you want to know WHY?

Do you want the simple truth?

I think it is confession time!

I have had an accident!

Recap:

April 2007 – my house went on the market

June 2007 – someone made me an offer to good to be true and experienced the The Stresses of Moving House.

July 2007 – Contracts were signed and NOT that I am superstitious, but the ONLY available date for moving my things was Friday 13th. Friday 13th has always been my lucky day, so I was happy ;-) …and not only that, the ‘timing’ was right, as I had booked a ticket to go to Peru in May, not even thinking my house would sell before. It was all happening!

October 16th 2007 – I moved into my new apartment (after my return from Peru), which is very close to the sea/beach.

11 days later:

October 27th 2007 – As usual I went for my early morning walk along the beach at about 7.15AM. I didn’t walk as far as I normally do, as I had blisters on both my heels from my new hiking boots. To keep a long, painful story short, ” I had a fall”! YES, ME who walks ALL of the time!

I have NO re-collection of what happened, no evidence of how it happened or even WHY it happened… HIGHER powers, that to me is obvious.

At the time of my fall I didn’t even feel any pain… I don’t want to sound to dramatic, but for sure the pain has come and is still going after almost 4 months ( and they say it takes 18 months for me to recover…AS IF!!)

Laying on the pavement at 7.45 AM in the morning, your foot pointing the other way, unable to get up or even move, cars going past (I stopped counting after 10) trying to get eye contact, but all you see is faces turning the other way doesn’t make you feel any better. I was grateful for my mobile phone. The Ambulance came (after quite some time), put my foot back into place (OUTCH!!!!), somehow shifted me into the ambulance and off we were to A&E. My old work collegue Allan (I used to work at A&E) injected Morphine. I felt better, even though the pain doesn’t really ease off, you just don’t care as much being drugged up. My right ankle was x-rayed, and I was told by the consultant that I ‘snapped’ both ankle bones of my right ankle….and when you think it can’t get any worse…

October 28th 2007 – I had surgery!

* Outside ankle: Plate with 7 screws
* Inside ankle: Double screw and almost 30 stitches (not enough skin to hold it all together)……

Disabled SignMy Wheelchair

After 6 weeks in a wheelchair (had to buy my own with elevated leg rest), use of zimmerframe at home and now on crutches, life seems to be a little more ‘normal’, even though, I still cannot drive (YET), do my usual shopping (can’t carry anything),do much domestic stuff at home, stand on a chair, bend my foot, kneel on the floor (very, very stiff and tight, swollen and bruised – up to my knee cap), sleep on my tummy, go swimming, cycling, dancing or wear high heels ;-) etc…it is ‘slow’ going, and even if my physio has been quite negative (which makes me work harder on my ankle), I feel that I am making GOOD progress. A lot of my progress I put that down to being positive towards what happened as well as my recovery. I have learned a lot about myself, others, who your friends are, who you can rely on (in times of need), that the pavements are uneven and not easy to use, especially when you are in a wheelchair and not to forget, even when you see the ‘wheelchair’ or ‘disabled’ sign, access is NEVER easy and sometimes quite impossible.

My secret is out now and I hope that I am forgiven, but I did not want to go on about my pains, the treatments and of course the ocassional loneliness.
